In feng shui, it's easy to calculate personal kua numbers using your birth date and your gender or gender identity. Your personal kua number dictates the most auspicious and inauspicious directions for positive and negative energy flow throughout your home and in your life.

Kua numbers are also associated with specific personality traits and one of the five feng shui elements of:

  • Earth: The earth element governs the northeast and southwest sectors and the center of your home or office.
  • Fire: The fire element rules the south sector.
  • Metal: The metal element governs west and northwest sectors.
  • Wood: The wood element rules the east and southeast sectors.
  • Water: The water element governs the north sector.

Kau Numbers and Eight Mansions

Kua numbers run from one through nine and are separated into two groups: East and West. Using the eight mansions method, each group has four auspicious directions and four inauspicious directions. These eight directions (also known as sectors) are also called the eight aspirations. Once you know your group, then you can sit, eat, work, study and perform other activities/tasks facing one of your four auspicious (best) directions.
