How to Identify a Chinese Dragon
Although the mystique of dragons has fascinated people since ancient times, determining if a dragon is a Chinese dragon or a Western dragon is sometimes confusing. Chinese dragons, also known as Oriental dragons, symbolize good luck, strength and power. When used in feng shui, dragons attract auspicious chi and provide protection. Generally, Western dragons represent evil.
Chinese dragons are made up of the parts of nine different animals or entities that include:
- The horns of a giant stag or deer
- The head of a horse or camel
- The eyes of a demon or the devil
- The neck of a snake or lizard
- The abdomen of a tortoise or the belly of a clam
- The scales of a carp
- The claws of an eagle or hawk
- The paws of a tiger
- The ears of an ox or bull
Most Chinese dragons do not have wings. However those that do, have bat like wings extending out of their front limbs.
Many Chinese dragons are depicted with a flaming pearl under their neck. The pearl is a symbol of good luck, wealth and prosperity.
