Here is what she had to say about bedroom arrangement feng shui and some things you can do to help create a bedroom sanctuary.

Common Bedroom Arrangement Feng Shui Mistakes

LTK: What do you think are the biggest mistakes couples make when decorating their bedrooms?

AM: Having the bedroom serve too many functions – especially having it be a place to store things! The bedroom should really only be doing two jobs:

  • Support good sleep
  • Provide the space for sharing intimacy

A third possible function is being the place where we store our clothes and get dressed. A feng shui’d bedroom is focused on these activities and not much more.

The bedroom is the most yin place in a home. Think of a comfy cave: dark, cozy, small. There should be a sense of enclosure, and freedom to move within it. Sometimes there’s no choice, but if possible, keep more public or stress-producing activities, such as computing and bill paying, out of the bedroom. Likewise, bookshelves and piles of books are distractions and belong elsewhere.

A Word about Televisions in Bedrooms

I want to say a special word here about televisions. Get it out of the bedroom! You’re inviting strangers into your bedroom every time you turn the TV on, bringing that often harsh outer world into your private chamber. Perhaps more importantly, you are distracting yourselves from each other. Humans lived for millennia without TV in the bedroom; you can do it, too!

One of the biggest stress producers in most of our homes is… CLUTTER! Even if you consider yourself a hopeless clutterbug, give yourself the gift of creating a clear and clean sanctuary in your bedroom. Be ruthless! Once you get the experience of living that way in this one room, you may even naturally start clearing clutter in other parts of your home and your life.

Bedroom Arrangement Tips for Couples

LTK: What are some easy tips you can give regarding bedroom feng shui decorating for couples.

AM: So often, the entire dynamic of a relationship plays out in the bedroom. For example, does one person’s style dominate in an imbalanced way? Is there a constant power struggle around keeping clothes picked up? Pay attention to what’s going on in your bedroom and use your experience decorating as a tool for observing how you communicate and make decisions together.

Ideally, both partners should have equal importance in the bedroom. This doesn’t mean that one partner shouldn’t have a bigger closet if that person has a lot more clothes. Just make sure that the other partner doesn’t feel dominated or squeezed out. Both partners' needs should be equally met. Ultimately, the goal is that both partners like how the bedroom looks and feels, and are comfortable when they spend time there.

Bedroom Arrangement Tips for Singles

LTK: What about some advice for those not in a relationship who are maybe wanting to find that someone special?

AM: One saying I love is “everything in feng shui is a metaphor.” The images around us affect us a lot, whether we’re aware of it or not.

People who have spent a lot of time single naturally tend to think in more solitary terms than coupled people. Interestingly, this often shows up in the artwork and chotchkas around the house. Single people often choose images of single people or items. Many women surround themselves with images of strong, inspiring women -- maybe beautiful and empowering, but not especially supportive of living in partnership!

Keep your eyes open for images of “twos” (or two matching images) that you like and bring those into your bedroom. Go through your knick-knacks and pair them up wherever possible.

Also, make sure your room isn’t so crammed that there’s no space for your beloved to come into your life. For example, make a little room in your closet or clear off a nightstand for your special someone.

Color in the Bedroom

LTK: How important is color when it comes to feng shui in the bedroom?

AM: Color is usually used to enhance a particular kind of energy (element), or to balance the yin/yang relationship. Some feng shui consultants work with color a lot, others not so much, saying that there are more powerful ways to affect the energies.

Personally, I love color and use it a lot because it can have a tremendous impact on how we feel in a space.

LTK: What do you think are the best colors to use in a bedroom?

Any color that’s comforting and relaxing for you. Blues are nice.

LTK: What do you think are the worst colors to use in a bedroom?

AM: I used to have orange walls in my bedroom – not very relaxing! Now I know better and steer clients stay away from colors that are very stimulating.

LTK: Are there any specific things people should not do when it comes to bedroom feng shui decorating?

AM: Don’t stress about not having good feng shui! Use the information in this interview and other articles as guidelines, but please understand that there’s no such thing as 100 percent perfect feng shui. Use these principles to do the best you can with what you have, and resolve to enjoy your home and your life!
