The Perfect Bedroom

Anyone who's decorated a bedroom from the ground up knows just how nitpicky the entire process can be. From the type of carpet and curtains to the furniture and paint color, no element is left untouched in creating the perfect bedroom. While you're probably quite confident in your choices, you may have left one very significant detail out – feng shui.

As it relates to the bedroom, utilizing the principles of feng shui during your design process will encourage harmony, balance and positive energy. While it's important for all areas of the home to reflect these ideals, it's perhaps even more important for the bedroom. Many feng shui experts regard bedrooms as the areas that receive the least amount of attention when it comes to coordinating rooms according to these ancient Chinese principles. Naturally active and busy, our hectic lifestyles often translate in the way we create our bedrooms. Even the slightest hint of messiness can signify disorder and quickly take away from the room's tranquility.

The key is to create a room that is serene, calm and relaxing – in essence, a room that could quickly chip away at your stresses as soon as you walk through the door. For couples, a soothing bedroom goes beyond the basic concept of alleviating stress and creating a tranquil environment. It's also about enhancing intimacy, creating passion, discouraging relationship stressors (such as infidelity), encouraging stability and promoting harmony in all aspects of life together.

Learning How to Set Up a Bedroom: Feng Shui for a Couple

Just like any room in the house, there are several dos and don'ts when it comes to the design of a proper feng shui bedroom. Knowing what to avoid will make life easier in many ways, while following some recommended tips will yield positive, pleasurable results that will hopefully nourish and protect your relationship.

What to Do

  • Lighting is an important ingredient for success in a feng shui bedroom. Candles in particular hold significant importance; they encourage positivity and create just the right sort of ambiance for a couple, which in turn helps strengthen the relationship.
  • Sunlight brings positive energy. Let it stream in during the day and close the curtains when it sets.
  • Colors, such as reds, pinks and pastels, set a romantic mood and help keep the relationship active.
  • Artwork depicting erotic or sensual images is especially appropriate in a couple's bedroom. It should convey a sense of serenity while suggesting intimacy. Choose a piece that both of you love for best results.
  • Mattresses should be kept at least 18 inches above the floor to create space between it and the earth's natural energy.
  • Headboards should be constructed of wood and should be placed against the wall. Wood suggests stability and support for the relationship and discourages the possibility of infidelity.
  • Beds should be placed diagonal to the door in the corner of the bedroom, with equal space on either side to encourage equality in the relationship. While the doorway should be visible, your bed should not be directly in its front path.
  • Crystals encourage romance when placed in the southwest corner of the room, or the relationship-specific area.
  • Photographs of both of you together, placed in random areas of the room, are appropriate and encourage a sense of history and togetherness.
  • Rubies placed on or above the nightstand preserve sexual compatibility.

What to Avoid

  • If possible, eliminate the presence of televisions, computers, exercise equipment and other such objects, all of which contribute to an unstable feeling of stress and irritability.
  • Avoid using the space beneath the bed as storage. Leave it clear to encourage positive chi.
  • Do not use overpowering, bold colors. Cool colors, such as blues, grays and greens, are okay to use, but should be balanced by warmth (especially reds). Too much cool coloring can discourage relaxation and thus drop libido levels, too. Allow for at least a 50/50 balance of the two color families.
  • Water in the bedroom is a no-no from almost any standpoint. It suggests loss, be it financial or in a relationship, and should be avoided (even if it is only a painting of a body of water).
  • Brass beds should be avoided, because they contain holes in the headboard. This suggests an immense lack of support.
  • Eliminate clutter of all kind, including anything associated with past loves (such as gifts and letters).
  • Do not overdo the bedroom's romantic elements. Frilly accessories, heart-shaped pillows, dolls and the like should be avoided; the key is to design with simplicity.

With a greater understanding how to set up a bedroom, feng shui for a couple can instantly enhance your love life. Don't be afraid to test a few different combinations of tips in order to determine which best benefits your relationship. The results are well worth the effort!
