Golden Ratio in a Face
From LoveToKnow Feng-Shui
Just as you can apply the mathematical concept of the Golden Ratio to perfection in nature, you can also apply the same concept of the Golden Ratio in a face.
The Golden Ratio: The Perfect Number and Perfection in Nature
An infinite number, the Golden Ratio is generally expressed mathematically as 1.618. Also known as Phi, the significance of this mathematical phenomenon is found in almost everything in the universe.
Called the Divine Ratio by Euclid, the Golden Ratio is found in nature, the arts and architecture. It exists in the solar system and our body’s cells. It is awe inspiring as you marvel at the beauty of a flower, the magnificence of the pyramids or the miracle of the growth of a human embryo.
Face Measurements for Golden Ratio
Two important components of the Golden Ratio in a face are symmetry and harmony. Symmetry is often described as the mirror image and harmony refers to a recurring theme found within the face and the measurements.
There are dozens of different face measurements taken to determine how close a face is to the golden ratio. The following are examples of these measurements:
- The width of one eye
- The width of both eyes
- The width of the bridge of the nose
- The length of the nose
- The measurement from the outer corner of the eye to the middle of the nose
- The width of your entire smile
- The width of the teeth visible when you smile
- The width of the two front top teeth
- The height and width of the two front teeth and the two next to them
Examples of how the measurements relate to one another:
- The width of the eyes to that of the mouth forms a Golden Ratio
- The formation of a golden rectangle by the front two top teeth
- The center two teeth and the two teeth next to them form a golden ratio in height and width
The Golden Ratio in a Face
Is it possible that we perceive physical beauty based on the Golden Ratio? That a human face that is more in proportion according to the Golden Ratio is considered more beautiful? According to many researchers and scientists, the answer to both questions in yes.
The Marquardt Beauty Analysis
A study by a California maxillo-facial surgeon, Dr. Stephen R. Marquardt included creating a mask with its foundation based on the pentagon and decagon. Dr. Marquardt used measurements of the golden sections of the face and facial features to arrive at the golden ratio. By doing this, all of the dimensions of the mask conformed to the ratio of Phi, or 1.618.
The resulting mask overlay, based on the golden ratio, is believed by many to represent natural beauty, or the perfect face. According to Dr. Marquardt the mask will overlay onto the faces of people we perceive to be beautiful regardless of their:
- Race
- Nationality
- Age
- Sex
- Features
The Marquardt Beauty Analysis, referred to as MBA, shows that the more in proportion a human face, the more that person is regarded as beautiful. Examples of people considered beautiful that fit the mask perfectly or almost perfectly include:
- The Mona Lisa
- Kate Moss
- Jessica Simpson

The Golden Ratio is perfection in nature, but also perfection in things manmade. The Golden Ratio in a face means the face is symmetrical, in proportion and is perceived as beautiful. It is perfection in beauty as determined by the Golden Ratio.
