Feng shui and fish tanks are probably some of the first introductions many Westerners have to using different elements in feng shui design.

In the Chinese culture, fish are a symbol of fortune. This is because the fish's eyes never close and many believe this allows fish the ability to see all obstacles and good fortunes ahead. Water is the symbol for money and the element that attracts good fortune and wealth. Putting these two elements together creates an auspicious feng shui enhancement.

You've probably noticed the large aquariums at many of the Chinese restaurants. You'll find these located in the front entrance of the restaurant so it's one of the first and last things customers see as they enter and leave the restaurant. Many believe that this very fortunate feng shui design element attracts prosperity, success and money to the proprietor. The aquarium and fish concept and use is not limited to restaurants however. Any kind of business can benefit from having a tank with fish in it.

If you decide to use an aquarium with fish in your home or business, place it according to the rules of the school of feng shui that you practice and follow.
Where to Place Your Fish Tank
If you follow Black Hat feng shui, then the best places for your fish tank is your career sector and the north wall of your home office or den.
Traditional classical feng shui of Form and Compass determines the prime sector of your home based on several reports such a flying star report. You will also find that you may need to move your aquarium as the stars move through various positions in your home, much like real star change positions in the hemisphere.
Things to Avoid
As with all things feng shui, there are some hard and fast rules that all of the feng shui schools follow.
No Water in Your Bedroom
One of the biggest mistakes people make is putting a fish aquarium or goldfish bowl in a bedroom. This is one of the worst feng shui misunderstandings about water and bedrooms. You don't want water in any bedroom since it is a restless element. You don't want to place photos or paintings of water over your bed or in the bedroom even if your bedroom is in the north sector of your home.
No Aquariums in Kitchens
The elements in a kitchen are closely associated with fire, so too much water is a very disruptive element in this room.
Keep It Clean
Since the energy being generated and attracted to your fish aquarium is very powerful and strong, you need to make sure the tank is kept clean. Here are some other tips:
- Make sure tank's filter systems is always working properly.
- Keep the tank filled with fresh water.
- Don't allow algae and scum to build up on the glass sides of the tank or on the tank fixtures.
- Remove any dead fish immediately and replace with a healthy one.
- If your fish become sick, take care of them immediately with supplies from your pet store.
- Don't overfeed and create a buildup of uneaten food.
What Kinds of Fish to Buy
One of the most common kinds of fish used in feng shui are Koi, but these fish get very large and unless you have a huge tank, it's easier to use their cousin, the goldfish. Red and black are two very auspicious colors in feng shui applications. Red and black fish are considered the best colors to use in order to optimize and activate elements. Beside the goldfish, another favorite choice is the Red sword and Black Molly. Any kind of fish will do as long as you follow the red and black criteria.
Numbers of Fish to Use
The number eight is the most fortunate number in feng shui. The number eight creates a pattern of two circles with no end and is considered a symbol of infinity. Since the number eight is associated with wealth and power, the infinity aspects means a limitless source of the energies this number will bring to you.
There are two schools of though about the number eight and the colors of the fish in your aquarium. One school states you should use seven red fish and one black fish, while the other school of thought states you should use seven black fish and only one red fish. In reality, it's your choice. You may need to experiment and see which combination seems to work best with your personal energy and the energy of your home.
