Feng Shui Bedroom
From LoveToKnow Feng-Shui
Feng shui bedroom design follows classic feng shui principles.
Feng Shui Bedroom Principles
Before you begin designing your bedroom, first prepare the space based on feng shui principles.
Where to Start
Feng shui principles find their basis in good hygiene and logic. If you're redesigning your bedroom, complete a few housekeeping tasks before turning your attention to furniture placement, color, style and design.
Declutter
- Remove unnecessary and rarely used items. Donate or give away any clothes that you can't wear. Holding on to things that no longer serve you creates negative chi and becomes clutter. Clutter clogs the flow of positive healthy chi. If you can't bring yourself to part with these personal items then pack it neatly away and place them in storage.
Clean the Floors
- Clean your bedroom as if you are putting your home on the market.
- Vacuum the carpet
- Remove the rug and have it professionally cleaned. If you can't afford to clean your rug, at least take it outside and clean it the old fashioned way with a rug beater.
- Mop hardwood floors with the correct product for the finish.
When dirt and dust accumlate, it creates a stagnant energy source that you don't want in your bedroom.
Clean the Walls
- At the very least go over your walls, baseboard and crown molding with a damp cloth to wipe off any dust, cobwebs or grime.
Wash Windows
- Clean your windows inside and out. This is a vital step in creating good energy flow. Chi energy enters and leaves your home through the doors and windows. If your windows are dirty, it traps chi inside your home. This causes chi to accumulate and build up, becoming stagnant.
- Open your windows and allow fresh air to circulate throughout your bedroom.
Clean Light Fixtures, Ceiling Fans and Lamps
- Don't forget to clean the overhead lights. Bugs and dirt often accumulate in these fixtures and create negative chi energy.
- Clean mirrors
- Dust and polish furniture
Draperies and Blinds
- Wash off your window blinds
- Have your draperies cleaned
Clean Bedding
- If your bedding is worn and tired looking, replace with new. If your bedding doesn't need replacing, then wash or dry clean if appropriate.
Clean and Organize Closets
- Cull your clothes and get rid of old, worn and torn clothing
- Organize your closet
Declutter drawers
- Reorganize your dresser and nightstand drawers
Feng Shui Furniture Placement
Now that you've cleared out stagnant chi energy in your bedroom, you're ready to begin placing your furniture.
Bedroom Placement Principles
There are a few basic principles for placing furniture in a bedroom that you'll want to follow closely to avoid creating poison arrows (sharp corners and angles that point to the bed).
- Avoid placing your bed directly across from the door. This is called the coffin position because your feet face the door. In the Chinese culture, this is the position in which bearers carry the corpse out of a bedroom. This bed placement causes all kinds of physical illnesses.
- Avoid placing your bed in front of a window or directly beneath it - Chi energy moves quickly through windows and you'll be in the direct path of this flow. If you have no choice and must place your bed in front of a window, make sure your headboard is heavy and can substitute as a wall. Allow enough space between your headboard and the window so you can easily walk behind the bed. This will allow chi energy to continue to flow uninhibited.
- The best bed placement is on a solid wall diagonally across from the entrance - This placement allows you to see anyone entering the bedroom. With this positioning of your bed, you'll be out of the direct path of chi flowing in and out of your room.
- Other pieces of furniture - Be aware of creating any poison arrows by having sharp angles and corners pointing toward the bed. You can always use [[feng shui cures or remedies for hard to place furniture pieces.
Designing Your Room Feng Shui Style
Once the decluttering and clean up are complete, it's now time to decorate your bedroom.
Feng Shui Elements
Pay close attention to which feng shui elements you activate in your bedroom. Never place an aquarium or water fountain in your bedroom. Depending on the direction your bedroom is located, add elements to activate the chi energy. You'll need to know your personal flying star placements and those of your home so you don't activate the wrong energy. This requires a professional analysis. If you can't afford to hire a feng shui practitioner, then you can minimize incorrect placements by creating a balance of elements.
Choosing the Perfect Color Scheme
Select a color that feels right to you. The colors in your bedroom should have a balance that not only relaxes but also stimulates. Many feng shui advocates believe you should adhere to a specific color pallet for bedrooms based on the direction your room is located. It certainly won't hurt your feng shui design, but it won't help create a better or more effective feng shui room. That's because color cannot activate feng shui elements. Certainly there are colors associated with the five elements, but color is used as reminders of those elements, not in place of the elements.
Making Good Choices
If you want to have a feng shui bedroom, then take the time to follow these steps and you'll have a bedroom you'll enjoy for a long time.
