Concept of Yin and Yang

The concept of yin and yang is based on the Chinese philosophies that opposite energies are actually dependant upon and connected to, one another.

It would take years to explain the concept of yin and yang in detail. Trying to take that much information in at once would also be considerably overwhelming, so it is best to start at the most basic concepts and philosophies of yin and yang before getting into the intricate details.

The most basic concept of this ancient philosophy of yin and yang is that everything, all energies, are interdependent upon one another. These energies must coexist in order to exist on their own. For example:

• Good cannot exist without evil
• Light cannot exist without the dark (or the absence of light)
• Heaven cannot exist without Hell
• Angels cannot exist without demons
• Poverty cannot exist without wealth
• Love cannot exist without hate

This interdependent relationship is evident in the traditional yin yang symbol, in which the dark side (yin) has a spot of the light and the light side (yang) has a spot of dark. Most of us are familiar with the traditional yin yang symbol, but many of us have no idea about the concepts behind each side of the circle.

The dark side of the yin yang symbol represents the yin, or female energies. These energies are as follows:

• Passive energy
• Cold
• Weak
• Night
• Earth

The light side of the yin yang symbol represents the yang or male energies and is based in the following concepts:

• The intangible soul
• Active energy
• Heat
• Strong
• Day
• Sky

The concept of the yin yang is based in the duality of all things. While yin energy and yang energy are interdependent upon one another to exist, the goal behind yin yang energy and concepts is balance. If you look at a yin yang symbol, you will notice that it is a circle without any borders; it is continually moving, evolving and changing. This basic yin yang concept applies to feng shui principles in the form of chi.

One of the reasons why the yin yang symbol is a circle is because a circle is never ending. This represents the concept of the constant movement and evolution of yin and yang energies. Without rigid edges, this energy is able to maintain a constant ebb and flow. This constant ebb and flow of energy, or constant change, relates to the yin yang concept of polarity.

The yin yang concept of polarity is a balance of energetic forces. Think of a yin yang symbol and the yin side pushing while the yang side pulls. These polar energies allow for the movement of the vital life force of chi energy.

Whether in your home or office, chi is constantly on the move and continually changing its path. Yin yang concepts come into play because it is the goal of feng shui to balance the positive and negative chi flow in your environment. Nobody wants negativity in their lives, but as yin yang theory and concepts dictate, one cannot exist without the other. So, with some positive, there is the negative and with some negative, there is positive.

The complex philosophies of the yin yang concepts may change based on Daoism, Buddhism or the western culture, but the basic concepts of polarity, duality, infinity and balance of yin yang theory remains the same throughout belief systems.
