Bagua Elements
From LoveToKnow Feng-Shui
Understanding the role of the bagua elements will help you use them to your advantage by adjusting the flow of the energy in any area of your life.
The Bagua
The bagua is an essential feng shui tool used to identify the nine basic life areas, also known as guas, in one concise diagram. You can use this tool to locate specific areas in your living space, strategically arrange your possessions to encourage the proper flow of energy, or chi, and bring the most benefits to the area you choose. The bagua tool is most beneficial when you apply it to your entire surroundings, but you can still use it to identify and focus on a specific life area that seems to be troubling you.
About the Bagua Elements
The natural elements play an essential role in the movement of energy through your space. Although there are two basic types of energy, yin and yang, each of the five elements serves to further refine those energies and they are used to bring balance when incorporated into various areas.
Five Elements
- Wood, aka tree: Encourages growth and new beginnings and is especially important to the Wealth/Abundance and Family/Friends guas
- Fire: Brings transformation and is particularly important to the Fame/Reputation gua
- Earth, aka soil: Creates stability, and is especially important to the Knowledge/Self-Improvement, Marriage/Romance and Health Center guas
- Metal: Promotes continuity, transitions energy and is particularly important to the Children/Creativity and Benefactors/Travel guas
- Water: When still, promotes tranquility and prosperity; when moving, encourages communication, and is especially important to the Career/Life Path gua
Their Relationships and Associations
As mentioned above, each element corresponds to one or two specific life areas on the bagua. By understanding the relationship between these elements, you can use this knowledge to manipulate the energy moving throughout your home or office. This is because each element interacts with the remaining four in specific ways by either supporting or destroying them.
The following table contains a wealth of information about the bagua elements and their many associations.

Pure Forms and Representations
You can bring the elements into your living space in their pure forms through items such as a plants (wood element), candles (fire element) or table top water fountains (water element). However, you can also use representations of an element to effect a feng shui cure. For example, a print or painting of a wooded area or waterfall could easily be used to bring the influence of wood or water to a specific gua. Even easier, you can simply add the color or associated shape of the specific element you need to manipulate the energy flow.
With so many possible combinations, learning to make full use of the bagua elements in your home takes a little study and practice. However, once you begin, you'll feel the benefits almost immediately.
