Bagua Directions

Each area of a feng shui bagua map corresponds to one of the eight bagua directions.

A fundamental feng shui tool, a bagua map defines the nine areas of a given space and the type of the energy located in each area of the space. After identifying the energies and their movements feng shui cures are applied to the negative energy areas.

When divided, the octagon shape of the bagua divides into eight equal outer sections with a center circle equal in size. Each section of the bagua is directly associated with a specific area of life, an element, colors and a direction. When working with a bagua map, generally the corners of the octagon are extended to form a square which divides into nine equal sections. The bagua, also known as a pakua or Lo Shu square, is then placed over a sketch of the layout of your house, office or room.

The directions of a bagua map each directly relate to a life aspect and to the specific area of your house found at the corresponding direction. For example, the area of prosperity is located in the northwest. That means it is the northwest section of the house. If the bagua is being applied to a particular room, it would be the northwest area of the room. The direction applies to the specific space of the bagua area. A space includes any type of environment including:

The south direction, corresponds to the life aspects of career and any life paths you choose. It also relates to your overall development of your way of life, your social connections and your soul purpose during your lifetime.

The southwest direction correlates to the life aspects of skills and knowledge. It also applies to all areas of study and learning, meditation and intuition. Self-cultivation, self-awareness and self-understanding are also included in this area of life aspects.

Immediate family and family relationships correspond to the west direction of a house or environment. Everything related to family, current, past and future finds its basis in this area of the house.

The northwest direction corresponds to prosperity, wealth and your ability to attract and receive them. Prosperity also relates to how you perceive the amount of money you have, not only the dollar amount.

The north direction of your house, or environment, directly relates to fame and your reputation. It affects how people see you, how they think of you and the respect they have for you. It also refers to your aspirations and the perception you have of yourself.

The direction that corresponds to relationships, love and marriage is northeast. Relationships refer to those with your partner, family and friends.

The east direction of your house or space correlates to the way you relate to children, your creative activities and your ability to complete things.

The southeast direction of any house or environment corresponds to helpful people and travel. This refers to friends and other people that help solve problems that arise and those that help with travel arrangements and making new contacts. It also relates to your support system, benefactors and guides, both spiritual and human.

Health and balance is at the center of the bagua just as it is at the center of all of life’s aspects. It does not belong to one direction or area of life but to all of them just as our health affects all of the other areas of our lives.

Balancing all of the aspects of your life using bagua directions and implementing feng shui cures to correct areas of imbalance and disharmony results in the positive flow of the vital energy of chi and a happier, healthier you.
